Rabbi Cary A. Friedman’s work Spiritual Survival for Law Enforcement is pivotal to understanding the pressures and pitfalls of the policing profession. Having served as a Police Chaplain for more than twenty-six years it is obvious that some are able to thrive in the culture and come out whole and healthy. Other members of the policing community become casualties of the profession, though walking they have been wounded in spirit and soul by what they have seen and experienced. Rabbi Friedman’s work on the subject makes a helpful distinction between emotional and spiritual health. He then provides helpful insights into his area of expertise which is retaining an intact spiritual identity. If for no other reason the last chapter is well worth the price of the book. “Tools for Renewal†is the best gathering of skills to survive and thrive that I have seen. This chapter rang a lot of bells for me in light of the care I have provided over the last two decades to the policing community. I would heartily recommend that both the member new to the street and those who are looking back over a long and distinguished career both avail themselves of the distilled wisdom of this valuable tool for Spiritual Survival for Law Enforcement.
